8 km from the city center, with an extension of 18 km long, it's located the ravine of Añashuayco from which the material that the Spaniards used to build the former city, is extracted.

Even today we can see how the workers extract the material using rustic tools and physical strength. Sillar is the name that, by tradition, we have given to this material that can be seen in practically all religious and civil constructions in the historic center of Arequipa.

The quarries of "sillar"

PROGRAM:

Departure to the Añashuayco quarry, 40 min drive depending on traffic. We can observe:

  • Observation and explanation of the sillar extraction process and carving.

  • Small hike to visit the quarries and also a non exploited quarry.

  • Observation of prehistoric drawings made by ancient inhabitants on the rock.

After the visit, we suggest you to eat in a typical restaurant known as Picanteria where you will taste the real local gastronomy.
